backlands falmouth

cohousing

Working with Ambos in Falmouth we explored two potential sites within the historic town centre on council owned sites known locally as the 'Backlands'.

On a split site which once housed a Victorian school building and other residential buildings we explored how a development could make the most of the significant level changes and history of the site.

Atop the common space a series of apartments and family houses of different sizes have been incorporated to cater for a range of needs within the town and cohousing membership group. Each home has a rear balcony with amazing views over the sea and town centre below. These connect to further roof terracing with growing space for food production and amenity. The proposed cladding for the building is conceived as coloured, patterned tiles referring to the many wall hung slate buildings, colourful terraces and history of china clay production. Each home has a rear balcony with amazing views over the sea and town centre below. These connect to further roof terracing with growing space for food production and amenity.

The project has been submitted for a Pre-App to Cornwall County Council for consideration, and the group are engaged in contesting the land through a community right to regenerate submission.

The project has been been developed alongside cost planning experts Crossley Hill.
