‘Back Garden City’ proposes new homes for multi-generational living within under-used back gardens in Knowle West, a low-density post war suburb of Bristol. The work was undertaken in collaboration with Knowle West Media Centre as part of their We Can Make project.

The new homes could enable a family member - an elderly parent or adult son/daughter - to live independently, in close proximity to the main dwelling. Multiple configurations could be developed, with residents or local authority land owners offering part of their gardens to form clusters of dwellings or community facilities.

Individual units aim to be appropriate for the back garden sites, practical to build, and great places to live, and deal with issues of overlooking, scale, parking, and privacy as well as seeking to enable a sense of community.
