cohousing

We have been working with 'Ambos', a cohousing group established in Falmouth to tackle the housing crisis in the town and provide genuinely affordable, sustainable new homes in a mutually supportive cohousing development.

Working with the residents we developed a landscape led scheme which consolidated the development to the north of the site and focussed on shared open green space to the south with a range of spaces for playing, growing and congregating. Public access along and through the site is maintained, with new links created to the surrounding area.

Our design concept uses the Falmouth working boat as a motif for both the site plan arrangement and section of the buildings. A common house with shared facilities is positioned at the centre of the development as a focus for all of the homes and creates a gateway into the site from pedestrian and vehicular access. The proposed homes rise in scale across the site, with all homes provided with a deep balcony overlooking the shared space. These are supported by an external timber structure which curves up to form the roof which is variously thatched and covered with a PV array.

Ambos are working with Garner and Tonic amongst other consultant stakeholders to push their ambitious plans forward with public campaigns to raise awareness of the issues they are seeking to address and overcome the hurdles they face.

The site at Bosvale has a previous planning consent for a significant care home and is set within an open green space in a suburban area of the town with good connections to both the coast and town centre amenities. Through grant funding we have worked with them across 3 sites in the town to explore different opportunities.
