white house
A radical retrofit, remodel and extensions to a large family home in Bristol using natural, healthy, ecological materials. located in st andrew’s on a double width plot, the project maximises connection to the garden and its solar orientation.
Located in St Andrews on a rare double-width plot, White House reimagines an existing family home for a family of five. Positioned opposite the clients’ previous house, the project takes full advantage of its generous garden and south-facing orientation, creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor living.
The brief was to retain and upgrade the existing structure while dramatically improving its environmental performance, comfort and relationship to the landscape. Through a carefully considered remodel and extension, the house has been opened up to create light-filled spaces, dramatic interior volumes and a striking bespoke staircase that forms the heart of the home.
Natural, healthy and low-carbon materials were used throughout, including lime render, clay plaster and UK-grown Douglas fir timber cladding. A series of timber solar-shading fins and a two-storey pergola help regulate solar gain while giving the building a distinctive architectural character.
The retrofit follows a fabric-first approach, supported by an air source heat pump, MVHR system and photovoltaic panels to significantly reduce operational energy use and carbon emissions.
The garden is integral to the design, featuring a natural swimming pond and biodiverse planting that provides shade, habitat and year-round interest. Together, the house and landscape create a healthy, sustainable and joyful place to live.
White House demonstrates how an existing home can be completely reimagined through thoughtful design, combining contemporary architecture, natural materials and low-energy living in a beautiful family home.
