This contemporary mixed use development on Bedminster Parade includes nine flats and courtyards on two upper floors, which were completed in December 2019, and the refurbishment of the ground floor retail space into an improved commercial unit.

The strategy for the project was to create a series of courtyards which give each dwelling a tranquil outdoor space within an otherwise busy urban setting. By carving out voids into the deep plan building this also created opportunities for generous daylighting and good natural ventilation through dual aspect windows.

Externally the dark engineering brick contrasts with the light, bright interiors. The glazed tiles were inspired by the tiling on the adjacent pub, and the listed copper turret visible from the upper level terraces.

”We feel the project is unique – it lifts the area’s perspective, bringing a generous modern and contemporary development to Bedminster. There is outdoor space and plenty of natural light for residents in vibrant city apartments - 8 out of 9 flats have courtyard space. The tenants have expressed their appreciation of this during lockdown. We love the Distinctive design – the angular corner look and colour palette of blue-black brick slips, highlighted by the aqua tones of the tiles reflects that of the surrounding buildings in a totally contemporary way.

Barefoot Architects’ visionary and bold approach enabled us to make a real statement with the Engine House. As clients we were persuaded to follow this bold route as a result of our trust in Barefoot. By attracting an award-winning bakery/ethical supermarket/cafe to the ground floor commercial space, a hub has been created for the local community to meet, socialise and enjoy. In addition, the tenants in the apartments themselves have developed their own community, helped by the inclusive design of the shared spaces.”
