beach house

Barefoot Architects worked in collaboration with Bristol contractors Natural Design and Build on this replacement house in a spectacular location overlooking the Severn Estuary in Portishead.

The new house has been designed to mediate the leap in scale between its two neighbours with sculpted dormer picture windows that capture views of the water and which step up across the elevation. A series of openings have been conceived as canvases framing different views up and down the estuary with access to a roof terrace giving views to Battery Point Lighthouse beyond. This local landmark provided the inspiration for the materials and form of the new house with crisp white render and a dark metal roof with folded planes covering dormers at front and rear.

The new house replaces a dilapidated, unoccupied existing property known as 'Haven'.
