Barefoot Architects worked with Specialised Supported Housing to deliver 18 apartments for adults with a range of physical and learning difficulties on a site in Sturminster Newton, North Dorset.

The project will extensively refurbish and convert the existing social services office building into 8 assisted living flats, whilst a purpose built new building to the rear of the site will provide 10 new homes, 4 of which will be suited to wheelchair users with more complex care needs.

The project has sought to give a real sense of independence to the residents by providing all of the ground floor resident with their own front door entrance (rather than via a corridor).

We have also developed designs for the landscape to provide areas of garden for each flat, as well as a shared courtyard for residents and staff to relax.

The materials for the building reflect the surroundings with a splash of colour to define individual flats and give a sense of identity.

“I am moved by the thought and understanding that has gone into the design of this groundbreaking project. People like my brother should face outwards to the community, and all too often they are hemmed in and isolated from the very society they long to be a part of. What you have done at in the building is genius and I'm sure your other projects warrant the same praise. Thank you for pre-empting my brother’s needs. Thank you for creating a living space for him where he can regain his worth as an individual and restore his wellbeing. Thank you for every last detail, down to the numbers on the doors and the individual post boxes. Nothing has been overlooked.”
